Legionnaires’ disease is a severe type of pneumonia caused by inhaling water droplets or mist contaminated with the bacterium Legionella pneumophila. It is named after a 1976 outbreak among attendees of an American Legion convention. The disease primarily affects the lungs but can also cause systemic symptoms in severe cases.
