Emergency disinfection secures safe water for sheltered accommodation

Close Navigation

When contamination threatened the potable water supply, we delivered an emergency disinfection, restoring safe water access within hours.

A sheltered accommodation provider in the south of the UK, housing vulnerable individuals, faced a critical public health risk. Routine inspection and water sampling revealed bird contamination in a cold water storage tank, which supplied hand washing and bathing water to communal areas. The tank, located on the roof, lacked a secure lid, and birds were nesting nearby. Subsequent sample results confirmed the presence of coliforms in the cold water supply, posing a serious threat to residents.

How we helped

Our team responded within six hours of the emergency call. We immediately carried out a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the contaminated cold water storage tank and all hot and cold water outlets. A temporary repair was made to the tank lid during the disinfection to prevent further contamination. While another contractor removed the birds and secured the loft area, ClearFlow took samples 48 hours post-disinfection from multiple locations. The potable water results confirmed the disinfection’s success, demonstrating that the water was safe for use. A new, securely fitted tank lid, along with a lid vent and rodent screens on overflows, were installed to prevent future contamination.
